"The Big Day"

Shoe wakes up to find most modern technology inoperable and all the people gone as a result of “The Fall”. After exhausting the resources within his hotel, he ventures out and finds evidence of one other survivor – a man who committed suicide. Faced with the possibility he may be the last man on Earth, he wrestles with depression and his lack of survival skills until he encounters Delondre and the Central Park community who give him hope…

While staying with the Central Park community, Shoe begins collecting clues about the Fall and what happened to all the people, starting with a warning the NYPD received from Homeland Security. He also finds himself in a life or death situation trying to protect a mother and her son from a “gang”, but is crippled by fear and fails to act. Seeing just how ill-equipped he is to deal with this new world, Shoe sets out on foot for Seattle to find out if his own family is still alive…

Episode 2

"Detritus"

After a near-death mishap in New Jersey, Shoe finds himself rescued by mysterious old Eli whose own wanderings have taken him off-course into Pennsylvania. As they go their separate ways, Eli imparts his “three rules” to Shoe… In Philadelphia, Shoe uncovers evidence of a larger conspiracy and possible terrorist plot involving the Speaker of the House. Also, Shoe encounters the religious Initiate, disrupts his Purificaiton ritual and gets captured by one of the four Horsemen…

Shoe is taken to New Eden – a non-technological society established in an old Amish town. There, he meets the charismatic JC who presents the first compelling unified theory about the Fall – it was the Rapture. Shoe nearly drinks the Kool-Aid to join the flock, but when he realizes the truth about JC and his cult, he looks for a way out. With the aid of a fellow dissident – who points out an active satellite still in orbit – Shoe escapes. But not without stealing JC’s “evidence” and the source of his power – the Sacred Polaroid…

Episode 3

"Purgatory"

A Pilgrim invites Shoe to join him on his journey to the Serpent Mound; not wanting to deviate from his intended route any further, Shoe declines. Then, while camping in the woods, Shoe is bitten by a raccoon. Fearing rabies, Shoe seeks out medicine in the Cincinnati suburbs only to discover evidence of violent looting and two rival factions holed up in rival bulk food stores about to wage war on each other. As tensions flare and Shoe’s condition worsens, he gets caught in the middle of the conflict, but ultimately convinces the “Natives” and the “Tourists” to cease fire. They nurse him back to health, “rabies” turns out to be mere food poisoning and Shoe gets back on the road. He stops for a change of clothing at a shopping mall and finds himself being stalked by the first Horseman. Shoe tries to stop the Horseman but still lacks the skill and steel to kill. Another man witnesses the Horseman’s accidental death, thus giving birth to the myth of “The Walker”…

Shoe takes a detour from his journey home and goes to the Serpent Mound. There, he finds hundreds of people with different theories about the Fall – aliens, UFOs, etc. – all awaiting some cosmic cataclysm heralded by the strange electromagnetic phenomena in the atmosphere that occurs every 47 minutes… As Shoe slowly begins to lose his sanity, he comes to believe that a boy has gone missing. He goes underground to search for the boy only to discover there was never really one at all. It was all in his mind…

Episode 4

"Delondre"

In Louisville, Shoe has his first encounter with the New Historians – a group of scholars who’ve taken it upon themselves to a) document life after the Fall and b) uncover what caused it. Their theory: it wasn’t terrorism – it was the government. Though they seem benevolent, a seemingly lunatic fringe “Contrarian” insists the NH is covering something up and sets out to prove it to Shoe – an act which will cost this man his life. Ultimately, Shoe escapes with information about the EMP satellite and the name “Project: Genesis”…

Pursued by the New Historians, Shoe makes his way to Nashville. He’s given shelter by a woman named Alice who helps him throw the NH off his trail. Shoe also meets Paul – a local mechanic who has another piece of evidence about what happened to the people: gas station video footage of someone spontaneously combusting into thin air. Sexual tension between Shoe and Alice, but Shoe wisely avoids temptation only to discover Alice is a disciple of JC who’s trying to keep him here until the Second Horseman arrives. “Divine Intervention” saves Shoe, causing Alice to abandon her faith in JC and become a disciple of Shoe instead…

Episode 5

"Central Park"

Eli bails Shoe out a second time; warns him not to take short cuts or cross the bridge into Memphis… Shoe ignores him and ends up in a genetic quarantine imposed by “The Doctor” – a seemingly sinister figure searching for a cure to his own flesh-eating disease (caused by the Nanites as they’re bombarded by the EMP). Though unable to save the Doctor, Shoe succeeds in “curing” the people with a placebo…

Shoe goes “off the grid” and tries to survive on his own, but still lacks the skill to do so until hunger overwhelms him and he kills a deer – which then gets him in trouble with a local landowner who accuses him of poaching. While fleeing “the Donald”, Shoe is captured by “Young Salty” who – through a series of tests – teaches him how to survive in the wilderness. The Donald catches up to them, but Young Salty kills him. Shoe then fakes his own death, divests himself of all identifiable objects – save a photo of Janelle and Kizzy – and sets off with renewed purpose, transformed…

Episode 6

"Hibakusha"

Following the Speaker of the House’s itinerary, Shoe goes to the airport in Oklahoma and finds a facility in a Faraday Cage – complete with working electricity. Using his newfound survivalist skills, Shoe tries to infiltrate the hangar, but is captured and interrogated by Project: Genesis… They show him the complete footage of the person spontaneously combusting. Shoe accuses them of being terrorists; they suggest he reserve judgment until he sees the whole picture and knock him unconscious. A couple days later, Shoe wakes to find himself in the middle of nowhere with all his belongings and a new clue in his journal: NORAD…

In Kansas, Shoe encounters people who’ve figured out a scientific explanation for the Fall and what happened to all the people. Using a homemade electromagnetic clock, they’ve successfully measured the 47-minute EMP interval – a recurring phenomenon they believe caused a dimensional shift that shunted them all into a parallel universe. And the only way to reverse it is with the power of a nuclear reactor. With the clock literally ticking, Shoe must now stop them from unleashing a massive meltdown…
